“Working in a place as breathtaking and ecologically sensitive as Lofoten presents a unique challenge: how can you add something meaningful without disturbing what already exists?”

A nod to history

While the wooden cabin on the rocks emits a contemporary minimalism, the structure nods to the historic, local vernacular architecture seen in Lofoten. For centuries, Storemolla was home to skippers and their row boats. Traditional fishing villages along the shorelines of Lofoten are dotted with humble one-storey fishermen’s rorbuer cottages resting on poles in the water. Similarly, as a curious hybrid between a wooden cabin and a sea-front boathouse, the Vipp guesthouse is raised on legs above pointy rock formations fading into the emerald waters.

“We sought to dissolve the boundary between shelter and seascape — allowing nature to flow uninterrupted into the architecture. Our intention was to let the vastness of the landscape be the dominant experience. Conceived as singular, quiet objects in the landscape, each unit is a precise timber structure, designed with minimal expression and a strong directional focus toward the sea.”

Design escapism

The True North Village Lofoten is the brainchild of Magne Furuholmen, Norwegian visual artist and world-renowned musician and composer from the band a-ha. Named after one of a-ha’s iconic songs tributed to Lofoten, the resort is conceived as a retreat aimed at responsible tourism where guests can experience the essence of the north.

Maritime heritage and modern convenience coincide with the arctic wilderness and offer a one-of-a-kind nature getaway with activities including whale watching, eagle safaris, diving, world-class fishing, ski touring, trekking, and climbing. It doesn’t get any more True North than this.

The entirety of True North Village Lofoten can accomodate up to 20 guests.

A primarily dark-toned interior punctuated by few key objects and furniture pieces allow the exterior to play a role in the 70 m2 cabin. Floor to ceiling glazing makes nature take centre stage, inviting guests to delve into the Arctic’s natural light display or scout for Lofoten’s singular wildlife. Art pieces by Magne Furuholmen soften the interior and custom versions of both Vipp’s Swivel chair and iconic pedal bin from 1939 have been interpreted with artwork by the artist.

Special editions

Vipp Swivel chair, Lofoten edition – The Norwegian visual artist, Magne Furuholmen, has developed a custom Vipp Swivel chair to decorate the guesthouse. In a new oxidized coating with a mat burnished finish, the chair is upholstered in Furuholmen’s textile with his signature word cloud in soft, natural colours. The chair is produced in a limited number, available at selected Vipp partners from November.

Vipp pedal bin, Lofoten edition – The Vipp pedal bin, is equally a canvas for Furuholmen’s play with letters. Decoding the graphics, the words Waste is Energy is deducted – a powerful reminder of the potential in waste sorting repeated artfully every time you step on the pedal. Available in a limited edition from November.

“Our palette of guesthouses explores different types of architectural typologies each creating a new doorway into our design universe. Our products stay the same, but the architecture and surroundings make it a completely new design experience. As a brand with Scandinavian roots, Lofoten stands out as one of the most breathtaking natural sceneries of the north.”

A part of the experience of our destinations is to engage with the interior of our rooms. Every room is equipped with a kitchen just waiting to be used, so when you have done your grocery shopping, start cooking and enjoy.

Should you have questions or need assistance, a member of the Vipp team will be standby during your stay to assist you.
