WHERE HISTORY CHECKS IN

Nestled in a lush river valley and surrounded by winding medieval streets and ancient stone bridges, Lagrasse is now home to a centuries-old townhouse reimagined by Vipp. The historic structure has been transformed into a sanctuary where modern design meets old-world charm.

Two years in the making, the project was guided by strict conservation rules. The building, dating back to the 1350s, has served as a private residence for centuries. With its thick stone walls, small medieval windows, and sloped tiled roof, the house has been preserved in spirit, while carefully modernized in function. Accessed from the entrance facing the village square, the three-storey, 97 m2 townhouse opens onto a ground floor laid with coarse pebbles, referencing the original cobblestones of the square.

From EUR 449/night. One bedroom, suitable for 2 adults

“The transformation of Vipp Townhouse acts as a bridge between the historical memory of this building and its future, as a cultural getaway in the village of Lagrasse, and as a new chapter in Vipp’s guesthouse story.”

“From the very first moment I stepped into this space, it was clear that the kitchen belonged on the first floor, becoming the heart of the house. I imagine guests bringing fresh produce from the square’s market to the kitchen for preparation, and then stepping out onto the terrace to dine.”

Overlooking the village’s central square, Place de la Halle, Vipp Townhouse invites guests to step into an environment where history lingers in every stone, and the slow pace of village life encourages pause and reflection.

For centuries, Place de la Halle thrived as a lively marketplace before serving as the town hall and post office. Today, the square is experiencing a revival, welcoming a wine shop, small restaurants and boutiques, and Saturday markets filled with local produce, all breathing new life into its historic arcades.

Sculptural staircase

A custom-designed staircase, crafted by a local metalsmith, Alejandro Berconsky, leads to the second floor, where the kitchen and dining space unfold.

“The staircase acts as a sculptural, connecting element, almost like an integrated art piece, tying the three levels of the house together while paying tribute to local craftsmanship.”

- Julie Cloos Mølsgaard.

Old soul, new stay

The bathroom and bedroom flow together as one generous suite, complete with a bespoke bed frame, a Vipp bath module and washing station, and a round Vipp Cabin table flanked by the Lagrasse Swivel chair.

“The table can be used as a vanity, as a workstation, or even for a late-night snack. It’s unusual to place a dining table in a bedroom, but here it felt natural - the space invites you to live differently.”  Julie Cloos Mølsgaard

Along one wall, floor-to-ceiling mirrors discreetly conceal the bathroom and built-in storage – a subtle nod to classic French interiors, where mirrors are often used to amplify light and space.

Activities

Considered a favourite destination for its historic vistas and nature’s charm, Lagrasse transforms with the seasons. The population swells from around 500 residents to over 4,000 in summer, as visitors pass through on their way across the Corbières wine district.  For those seeking quietude, the best time to visit is from late September to April, when village streets are left to locals.

In the warmer months, the Orbieu river is dammed to create a natural swimming spot for locals and visitors alike – a tradition that offers refreshing respite from the sun.

The surrounding hills invite for hikes through vineyards and oak forests, while the 8th-century Lagrasse Abbey stands as a must-see - a living monument to the area’s monastic past. Afternoons unfold at a slower pace here. Guests can enjoy wine and cheese in the square, browse local leather shops, or take short drives to explore neighbouring villages scattered across the Corbières.
