This is Rubbish
A waste bin made of waste
Without altering the design of the original Vipp15 pedal bin crafted by Holger Nielsen in Randers, Denmark in 1939, Vipp’s team of engineers challenged themselves to rethink the production of the pedal bin with the purpose of radically reducing raw materials by reusing own production waste.

‘Rubbish’ is Vipp’s renewable take on its pedal bin from 1939, a design classic now available in 75% recycled materials.

DETAIL
Signature fibre material
30% sawdust and 70% plastic waste are reprocessed and transformed into a new Vipp signature fibre material shaping the body of the bin.

Safeguarding original traits
The original dome-shaped lid in stainless steel remains intact as a unique design feature of the original bin. Rubber components and pedal mechanism are equally repeated from the standard bin due to its proven long lifetime and durability

DETAIL
Beauty marks
The bin corpus is dressed in its natural state ressembling the raw rind of a log. Each surface holds a unique structure, some might see smaller imperfections, but we call them beauty marks.

Kasper Egelund, CEO
'By reusing industrial plastic waste and leftovers from our wood production, we wrap the Vipp bin in recycled materials, ready to take your sorted trash for years to come. And at some point, be handed over to the next generation.”

Making of Rubbish
From waste to value
Collected production waste is reprocessed and transformed into a new Vipp signature fibre material shaping the body of the bin. Paddling together a granulate of shredded industrial plastic leftovers and sawdust from Vipp’s furniture production have paved the way for a new material upscaling the use of recycled materials in Vipp’s bestselling product.

Making of Rubbish
Production in proximity
Locally produced in Denmark, Vipp’s signature fibre material is a result of a process where plastic binds the wood fibres in a paste which is then pressed into a mould.

Making of Rubbish
What a waste
Wood leftovers are sourced locally in Denmark from Vipp’s tabletop manufacturing, while plastic waste is sourced from amongst others the leftover plastic wrapping of textile roles used in Vipp’s sofa production.

Making of Rubbish
Moulded and mounted
Moulded parts are glued together to shape the bin corpus. For durability purpose the body is treated with a protective surface coating.

Raw state
The compound hatches a unique light grey colour with visible surface structures created by the raw materials. Rather than a colour coat, the bin corpus is dressed in its natural and raw state.
Mikkel Bech Nielsen - Project Manager
'It is imperative to us that greener doesn’t mean grim. To encourage innovation towards a more mindful use of waste materials, a recycled version of the bin should be steadfastly faithful to its original aesthetic.'
